Sylvanes Abbey, Aveyron--Stock Photo
Sylvanes Abbey, Aveyron. Nestled in the heart of a wooded valley, the ancient abbey of Sylvanès was founded in 1136 by Pons de l’Héras, a repentant robber who, touched by divine grace, decided to end his life in service to God. It took more than a century for the monks to build the fabulous abbey.
From the late Middle Ages, the abbey went through a long period of decline: sold as national property during the revolution, the building later became a stone quarry and even a sheep barn.
Declared a historical monument in 1854, the Abbey was bought by the municipality of Sylvanès in 1970.
